Chatelus le Marcheix

Our village surrounded by fields, forests, lakes and streams is situated some 22 miles (35 km) southwest of Guéret by the banks of the Thaurion river. The village lies on the pilgrimage path of the Way of St. James. The river is very close to 'La Grange de Chatelus' and has a jetty and a small beach. There is supervised swimming during the summer months. There is also a little post office and bar/cafe where you can order and collect your fresh bread each day. There is a 14th century church which can be seen across the valley from our bedroom windows.
Bourganeuf

This beautifully picturesque village has a cinema, supermarket and lots of little shops and bars to explore. It is the one of the closest towns to 'La Grange de Chatelus'.

On 10th June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, in Haute-Vienne, in then Nazi-occupied France was destroyed, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a Nazi Waffen-SS company. A new village was built nearby after the war, but French president Charles de Gaulle ordered the original maintained as a permanent memorial and museum.

Wolves used to be a natural inhabitant of France. Unfortunately they were hunted so much that they were no longer seen. The park costs around 10 euros for entry. "We had a great day out seeing the wolves, our three children loved it, they also really, really liked petting the baby goats." Trip Advisor review.

Courtille is a beach with safe swimming, various water sports (sailing, windsurfing, pedaloes, boat hire, canoeing), equipment hire, courses, classes, fishing areas developed especially for people with disabilities, picnic areas with a variety of games for children, a fitness trail and walking path around the lake, a roller skating rink and in the summer, archery, pedal karting, inflatables.
Horse Riding
Limousin is ideal for horse riders: the region has approximately 19 horses per 1,000 inhabitants, well above the French national average. It is a region of horse breeders and home to the Anglo Arab horses, originating in Pompadour in the 19th century where there is now a national stud farm. With over 120 equestrian centres spread out the region (42 percent in Corrèze, 31 percent in Haute-Vienne and 27 percent in the Creuse), Limousin is an ideal place for riding.
The département of the Creuse has over 360 Km of transcorréziennes riding trails suitable to both beginners and experienced riders.
